Third-ranked Montana State moved into sole possession of first place in the Big Sky Conference football standings with a 38-36 road win over Portland State on Saturday, an afternoon that all four road teams won.
In other games, Sacramento State became the first FCS team in history not to attempt a pass, beating Northern Colorado 14-0. Montana topped Idaho State 33-0, and Eastern Washington beat Northern Arizona 38-26.
Montana State sophomore quarterback DeNarius McGhee threw for four touchdowns and ran for a fifth as the Bobcats held on against the Vikings in a battle of the two remaining undefeated teams in conference. Jason Cunningham kicked a 6:52 to play to put the Bobcats up 38-22, but PSU rallied with a pair of touchdowns. A two-point conversion try with 2:52 remaining failed.
McGhee completed 15-of-22 passes for 255 yards and four touchdowns. Cory McCaffrey rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns for Portland State.
Montana's defense held Idaho State to five first downs and 121 yards of total offense in a 33-0 win over Idaho State at Holt Arena. It was Montana's first conference road shutout since 2005. The Bengals turned the ball over seven times. Brody McKnight kicked four field goals - all of longer than 40 yards to lead the Griz.
Bo Levi Mitchell completed 27-of-40 passes for 356 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Eagles' 38-26 win over Northern Arizona. Mitchell also rushed for a touchdown. EWU won the turnover battle 4-0. NAU QB Cary Grossart threw for 355 yards and two touchdowns.
Sacramento State battled to a 14-0 win over Northern Colorado on an ugly day in Greeley. The Hornets didn't even attempt a pass in the rain, snow and howling winds that wreaked havoc on the game. Sacramento State QB Jeff Fleming scored on a 15-yard run in the first quarter. David Coleman scored the only other touchdown on a 4-yard fumble recovery.
The teams combined for just 12 first downs and 249 yards of total offense. Northern Colorado completed three passes for 29 yards.
