The Grizzly Scholarship Association will host a pregame tailgate for fans attending the Montana-Appalachian State game at Boone, N.C., on Saturday, Sept. 8. The tailgate, which precedes one of the most anticipated FCS games of the season, will start at 4 p.m. (ET) and run for two hours. The game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. (ET).The tailgate will be held on ASU's campus at the Quinn Recreation Center patio (see linked map above for directions), which is located just a short walk from both the main stadium parking lot and Kidd Brewer Stadium. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. No RSVP is required. The game, which will be available on both ESPN GamePlan and ESPN3, is the first meeting in a home-and-home series between two of the FCS level's premier programs. Montana ('95, '01) and Appalachian State ('05, '06, '07) have combined to win five national championships and have appeared in 10 title games. The Grizzlies and Mountaineers will meet at Washington-Grizzly Stadium next Aug. 31 to open the 2013 season.Montana and Appalachian State have met twice before, both times in Missoula in national semifinal games. The Grizzlies won in 2000, 19-16 in overtime, and 24-17 in 2009 in an ESPN game that at the time was the highest-rated televised game in FCS history. This year's meeting will take place at 21,650-seat Kidd Brewer Stadium, where the Mountaineers are 61-5 in their last 66 home games.Montana went 11-3 in 2011 and advanced to the national semifinals before losing 31-28 at Sam Houston State. Appalachian State went 8-4 last season, losing to Maine, 34-12, in an FCS first-round game at Kidd Brewer Stadium. For more information on the pregame tailgate, contact GSA assistant director Brynn Molloy at 406-243-5405 or brynn.molloy@mso.umt.edu.

Griz to Play Huskies On Gridiron In 2017

SEATTLE, WASH. (8/24-12)  – For the first time since 1951, The University of Montana Grizzlies will meet the University of Washington Huskies on the football field, as the Grizzlies will play UW in Seattle on Sept. 2, 2017, at Husky Stadium.

UM interim director of athletics Jean Gee announced today that an agreement has been reached for the two Northwest schools to renew their gridiron rivalry.

“We are so excited about the renewal of this rivalry,” Gee said. “We have many alums in that area and look forward to seeing a lot of old friends. In addition, the Seattle area is a rich area for our recruiting efforts, and I am pleased that so many potential new Grizzlies will be able to see our exceptional product first-hand.”
Montana, the 1995 and 2001 NCAA Division I FCS champion, played in the same conference (the Pacific Coast Conference, which eventually became the Pac-12) as the UW from 1924 to 1950.

The Huskies and Griz played one another 18 times from 1920 to 1951, with all but one of those meetings coming in Seattle.  UW leads the series 1-16-1, with Montana’s only win 18-14 at UW in 1920.  The teams tied 6-6 in 1929 at UW.

The Montana-UW game is the only confirmed, non-conference game currently on the Grizzlies’ 2017 schedule.
