Griz to Play Huskies On Gridiron In 2017
SEATTLE, WASH. (8/24-12) – For the first time since 1951, The University of Montana Grizzlies will meet the University of Washington Huskies on the football field, as the Grizzlies will play UW in Seattle on Sept. 2, 2017, at Husky Stadium.
UM interim director of athletics Jean Gee announced today that an agreement has been reached for the two Northwest schools to renew their gridiron rivalry.
“We are so excited about the renewal of this rivalry,” Gee said. “We have many alums in that area and look forward to seeing a lot of old friends. In addition, the Seattle area is a rich area for our recruiting efforts, and I am pleased that so many potential new Grizzlies will be able to see our exceptional product first-hand.”
Montana, the 1995 and 2001 NCAA Division I FCS champion, played in the same conference (the Pacific Coast Conference, which eventually became the Pac-12) as the UW from 1924 to 1950.
The Huskies and Griz played one another 18 times from 1920 to 1951, with all but one of those meetings coming in Seattle. UW leads the series 1-16-1, with Montana’s only win 18-14 at UW in 1920. The teams tied 6-6 in 1929 at UW.
The Montana-UW game is the only confirmed, non-conference game currently on the Grizzlies’ 2017 schedule.
