Grizzlies finish 16th at final fall tournament

The Montana women’s golf team shot a 314 Sunday in the final round of the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. The Grizzlies entered the day in 16th place after rounds of 324 and 305 on Saturday and finished the day in 16th out of the 20 teams competing.

The tournament was the final one of the fall for Montana. The Grizzlies won’t compete again until the Jim West Challenge in New Braunfels, Texas, on Feb. 17-18.

Montana was all over the scorecard during its three rounds. Three of the five Grizzlies competing had at least a nine-shot swing between their lowest- and highest-scoring rounds. The two that didn’t, not surprisingly, led the Grizzlies.

Redshirt freshman Alexa Schendelman (79-75-80--234), who become Montana’s third low scorer in four fall tournaments, finished 18-over and tied for 41st. Freshman Amanda Kahn (84-77-79--240) tied for 63rd and finished as the Grizzlies’ No. 2 golfer for the second consecutive tournament.

After shooting an uncharacteristic 87 in Saturday’s second round, freshman Barbora Bakova (81-87-74--242) shot a 2-over 74 on Sunday, the best of Montana’s 15 rounds at the tournament.

Junior Tara Green (80-77-86--243) tied for 72nd, senior Lindsay Reeve (87-76-81--244) tied for 75th. Green’s 86 on Sunday matched the second-highest score of her collegiate career.

The team scores were tight atop the leaderboard following Saturday’s rounds, and that led to plenty of drama on Sunday.

When the last putt had dropped, CSU Fullerton (303-301-305--909) won by a stroke over CSU Northridge (306-307-297--910). Northridge’s 297 on Sunday was one of just two sub-300 rounds at the tournament. Hawaii also shot a 297 in Saturday’s second round.

Rollins (303-307-302--912) finished three strokes back, San Francisco (300-304-309--913) and Western Carolina (300-301-312--913), the leader after day one, finished four strokes back.

Cal Poly’s Taylor Yoshitake (73-70-70--213) and CSU Northridge’s Clariss Guce (69-74-70--213) tied for medalist honors at 3-under. No other golfer was better than 2-over.

Montana (324-305-314--943) finished third among the seven Big Sky Conference teams competing, four shots behind Southern Utah (310-315-314--939). Eastern Washington (319-308-314--941), which was led by Marissa Borja’s (76-69-73--218) third-place finish, was two strokes better than Montana.
