The second-ranked Monana State Bobcats started slow, but finished strong on Saturday against Weber State, downing the Wildcats 44-24 and clinching at least a share of their second straight Big Sky Conference regular-season football championship.
Sophomore quaterback DeNarius McGhee threw for a season-high 310 yards and three touchdowns, recovering from a poor start. McGhee threw interceptions on his first two pass attempts, and fumbled twice in the first half. Montana State trailed 24-20 at the half, but outscored the Wildcats 24-0 in the second half.
Montana State won for the ninth straight time, improving to 7-0 in conference and 9-1 overall. The Bobcats can clinch the outright title and the automatic bid to the playoffs with a win at home on Nov. 19 against No. 10 Montana. If Montana wins the game, the Grizzlies will be co-champions and earn the automatic bid to the playoffs.
Montana beat Western Oregon 32-7 on Saturday behind six field goals from senior kicker Brody McKnight. Running back Peter Nguyen rushed for a career-high 149 yards.
Portland State won its third straight game and moved to 6-3 overall with a 29-20 home win over Sacramento State. Senior QB Connor Kavanaugh rolled up 360 yards of total offense, scoring one rushing touchdown and throwing for another score.
Northern Arizona sophomore Zach Bauman rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns, and caught five passes for 121 yards and a touchdown to lead the Lumberjacks to a 34-14 win over Northern Colorado. Bauman became the first Big Sky player in four years to rush for 100 yards and have 100 receiving yards in the same game. Weber State's Trevyn Smith accomplished the feat on Nov. 3, 2007 in a win over Idaho State.
