For the 26th time in 28 years, multiple Big Sky Conference teams will compete in the Division I Football Championshio.
Montana and Montana State both landed spots in the 20-team field, and both will play at home in second-round games on Saturday, Dec. 3. Montana, the No. 4 seed, will play host to the winner of a first-round game between Central Arkansas and Tennessee Tech. Montana State will take on New Hampshire of the Colonial Athletic Association at Bobcat Stadium in Bozeman.
Montana (9-2) earned the Big Sky's automatic bid to the playoffs with a 36-10 road win over Montana State, which was ranked No. 1. The Grizzlies return to the playoffs after having a record string of 17 consecutive playoff appearances snapped last year. Montana has won seven straight games, and finished 6-0 at Washington-Grizzly Stadium during the regular season.
Montana is making its 21st overall playoff appearance, an FCS record. The Grizzlies are 27-6 in playoff games at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.The Grizzlies, led by second-year head coach Robin Pflugrad, are 30-18 all-time in the playoffs. UM's 30 playoff victories ranks second all-time to Georgia Southern's 39. Montana won national titles in 1995 and 2001, and finished second in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2009.
Montana State (9-2) shared the Big Sky regular-season championship with Montana and earned an at-large bid to the playoff field. Montana State is in the playoffs for the second straight season, and the sixth time overall. The Bobcats, coached by Rob Ash, are 4-4 all-time in the playoffs, including a 3-1 record at Bobcat Stadium. Montana State won the national championship in 1984.
Montana and Montana State are on the same side of the bracket, and could meet in a semifinal game on Dec. 16 or 17.
Montana is ranked fifth in the final regular season Sports Network/Fathead.com Top 25. Montana State dropped from first to seventh following the loss to Montana.
All of the second-round games will be available on ESPN3. There will be no local television telecasts.
