This Week’s Sky Highlights
Four conference games highlight the week four schedule in the Big Sky Conference....Montana State and Eastern Washington, which shared the 2010 regular-season championship, square off in Cheney at “The Inferno.” It’s the home-opener for defending national champion Eastern Washington, which is off to an 0-3 start.. .Sacramento State will try to beat Montana for the first time when the teams square off at Hornet Stadium. Montana is 16-0 all-time against Sacramento State...Mike Kramer and Idaho State hit the road to face Jerome Souers and Northern Arizona. This will be the 10th time Souers and Kramer have coached against each other...Weber State takes on Northern Colorado in Greeley in a game that will be televised on Altitude...Portland State steps out of conference to take on Texas Christian.

YOST WITH THE MOST: Idaho State’s Kevin Yost tied the Big Sky single-game record for completions in a game with 47 in the Bengals’ 50-20 win over Northern Colorado. Yost completed 47 of 68 passes for 508 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Yost tied Weber State’s Jamie Martin and Northern Arizona’s Michael Herrick with 47 completions in a game. Martin accomplished the feat in 1991 against Idaho State. Herrick completed 47 against Eastern Washington in 2009. Yost shattered the previous ISU single-game record of 48 completions set by Jason Whitmer in 1989. As a team, Idaho State completed 53-of 77-passes for 544 yards. The 53 completions set a Big Sky single-game record. The previous mark was 47 set by Weber State in 1991 and Northern Arizona in 2009. The 77 pass attempts fell two short of the record of 79 set by Idaho State in a 2004 game against Portland State. The 508 passing yards were the third-most in school history, and set a Holt Arena record. Yost has completed 103-of-144 passes for 1,183 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions in three games. He leads the nation in passing yards per game with an average of 394.3. He is also first in total offense with an average of 405.5 yards per game. ISU leads the nation in passing yards with game with an average of 468.3. The Bengals are fifth in total offense with an average of 504.7 yards per game. Yost spread the ball around plenty on Saturday. Derek Graves caught 15 passes for 114 yards, while Rodrick Rumble had 14 catches for 158 yards and a touchdown. Anthony Boyles had nine catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns. The 50 points scored by Idaho State were the most for the Bengals since beating Eastern Washington 55-52 in two overtimes in 2003. ISU has 10 passing touchdowns so far this season, after finishing the 2010 campaign with 12. ISU has already completed 123 passes after completing 150 all of last season.
STREAKS END: Idaho State and Portland State both ended long conference losing streaks with wins last Saturday. Idaho State snapped an eight-game conference losing streak and an 11-game losing streak to Division I teams with its 50-20 win over Northern Colorado. Portland State snapped a seven-game conference losing streak with a 31-29 win over Northern Colorado. The Vikings’ hadn’t won a conference game beating Idaho State 38-3 on Oct. 2, 2010. ISU’s last conference and Division I victory was a 41-34 win over Portland State on Nov. 14, 2009.
300 CLUB: Montana, Weber State and Portland State all rushed for more than 300 yards in victories on Saturday. Montana rushed for 316 yards, and averaged 6.9 yards per carry in its 17-14 win over Eastern Washington. It was the most rushing yards by UM in 98 games. Sophomore QB Jordan Johnson led the way with 102 yards on 10 carries. Weber State gained 324 yards on the ground in its 49-17 win over Sacramento State. Tanner Hinds carried 10 times for 104 yards and a touchdown. The Wildcats averaged 7.4 yards per carry. Portland State, which leads the nation in rushing, gained 361 on the ground in its win over Northern Arizona. Cory McCaffrey gained 222 yards and four touchdowns. QB Connor Kavanaugh gained 134 yards. The Vikings averaged 6.8 yards per carry.
IN THE POLLS: Montana State and Montana both jumped spots in this week’s major FCS rankings, while Eastern Washington dropped, and Sacramento State dropped out. Montana State improved to fourth in The Sports Network/Fathead.com poll, as well as the Coaches’ Poll. MSU was fifth in the Sports Network Poll last week, and fourth in the Coaches. Montana jumped two spots in both. The Griz are not ninth in the coaches’ poll and 10th in the Sports Network Poll. EWU, which was No. 1 in both polls two weeks ago, is now 21st in the Sports Network and 22 in the coaches. Future Big Sky member Southern Utah is ranked 23rd in the Sports Network Poll.
EXTRA POINTS: ISU coach Mike Kramer has 79 career wins in the Big Sky and can move into a third on the all-time list with a win on Saturday over Northern Arizona…Montana set a new Washington-Grizzly Stadium attendance record with 26,066 at Saturday’s tilt with EWU…Weber State’s David James returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown in a win over Sacramento State, the second-longest interception return in school history…Montana State’s Steven Bethley became the first Bobcat since 2009 to intercept two passes in a game last Saturday against Minot State….Idaho State will try to snap a 28-game road losing streak and a losing streak of 19 straight on the road Saturday at Northern Arizona...Portland State has won back-to-back games for the first time since 2007-08...EWU is 0-3 for the first time since 2006. The Eagles haven’t been 0-4 since 1983...ISU has won back-to-back games for the first time since the 2005 season. ISU hasn’t won three in a row since the 2003 campaign...UM linebacker John Kanongata’a was named a national All-Star by the College Sporting News...Montana threw for just 34 yards in its win over EWU...Saturday’s Weber State-Northern Colorado game will air live on Altitude...NAU QB Cary Grossart threw for 322 yards against Portland State, his first 300-yard passing game.. NC’s VJ Holmes had a 58-yard interception return for a TD against Idaho State.
