Saturday proved to be a great day for home teams in Big Sky Conference football action. Idaho State, Monana, Portland State and Weber State all won home conference games on the first day of league play, while Montana State won a home non-conference game.
No. 10 Montana handed defending national champion and 12th-ranked Eastern Washington its third straight loss, 17-14 in front of a record crowd at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. UM rolled up 316 rushing yards, and its defense came up with two key interceptions.
Idaho State snapped an 11-game losing streak to Division I teams and also ended an eight-game conference losing streak with a 50-20 win over Northern Colorado. Idaho State quarterback Kevin Yost completed 47 passes for 508 yards and four touchdowns. The 47 completions tied the Big Sky single-season record. The Bengals completed a Big Sky single-game record 53 passes on 77 attempts for 544 yards. Three Bengal WR had at least 114 receiving yards. ISU's defense intercepted four passes and returned two for touchdowns.
Portland State snapped a seven-game conference losing streak and moved to 2-0 with a 31-29 win over Northern Arizona. The Lumberjacks failed on a 2-point conversion with 3:22 to play, and missed a field-goal try in the final seconds. Senior running back Cory McCaffrey rushed for 222 yards and four touchdowns, and QB Connor Kavanaugh rushed for 134 yards in the win.
Weber State picked up its first win of the season, topping Sacramento State 49-17. Junior QB Mike Hoke threw three touchdown passes, and the Wildcat defense picked off three passes. Weber State rushed for 324 yards, including 104 and a score from Tanner Hinds.
