GRIZ IN HOME OPENERS: Montana is 73-35-2 in home openers since 1897 (that record includes Griz "home" openers that were played in Billings and Butte). The Griz are 21-4 in home openers played in Washington-Grizzly Stadium (since 1986).
GRIZ LAST GAME: Montana had three key turnovers in a 42-16 loss at Tennessee. UT scored four unanswered TDs -- three on passes by quarterback Tyler Brady, covering 47, 81, and 9 yards, and a 9-yard run by Tauren Poole, and took a commanding 28-0 lead with 4:06 left until halftime. (A Montana-Tennessee game recap is on add 12-12-12).
LONG BOMB: The Grizzlies' first score came with 3:49 left until intermission when quarterback Jordan Johnson hit wide receiver Jabin Sambrano for an 80-yard scoring pass -- the eighth longest in school history. UM's other points came on a safety when defensive tackle Ben Hughes tackled Poole in the endzone, and a 7-yard run by Jordan Canada.
HUGHES NAMED POW: Hughes, a 6-0, 285-pound senior from Grants Pass, Ore., was named the Big Sky "Player of the Week" on defense. He had 10 tackles, two forced fumbles, two tackles for loss, a sack, and he also made a tackle in the endzone for a safety.
LARGEST CROWD EVER: The Griz played in front of the largest crowd in school and Big Sky history in UT's Neyland Stadium, as 94,661 were on hand. The largest crowd Montana had ever had in a game previously was 70,585 in a 41-7 loss at 16th ranked Iowa in 2006.
BIG SKY RECORD: The Grizzly-Vols match-up was the largest crowd to ever see a Big Sky team play. That standard was set last year when Idaho State played Georgia in front of 92,746 fans.
CAL POLY LAST WEEK: The Mustangs lost 49-21 at San Diego State (a 9-4 team last year). Junior quarterback Andree Broadus was 6-of-13-0 for 95 yards, while senior slotback Mark Rogers rushed 12 times for 51 yards. Cal Poly rushed 46 times for 137 yards and 3 TDs, and had 284 total yards on 60 plays. SDSU had 492 yards on 77 plays. The Aztecs led 28-14 at intermission.
UM-CAL POLY LAST MEETING: The Mustangs overcame a 20-14 third quarter deficit, and held off a frenzied Grizzly rally for a 35-33 home victory in Alex G. Spanos Stadium. After the teams ended the first half tied at 14-14, senior kicker Brody McKnight nailed two field goals to give the Griz a 20-14 lead with 3:15 left in the third stanza. But, the Mustangs took the lead for good in just two minutes on a pair of big plays -- an 83-yard scoring pass from back-up quarterback Doug Shumway to halfback David Mahr and a 45-yard interception return by Scottie Cordier for a TD. The Griz had a chance to tie the game in the final minutes, but a two-point conversion attempt failed.
JOINING THE SKY: Cal Poly is one of four schools joining the Big Sky Conference in July of 2012. The Mustangs and UC Davis are football-only additions to the league, while North Dakota and Southern Utah will be full-fledged league members.
FUTURE GRIZZLY-MUSTANG MATCH-UPS: The Grizzlies and Mustangs play each other the next two seasons in a row. Montana hosts both games, on Sept. 8th in the teams' first-ever Big Sky Conference match-up, and then a year later in 2013 they play each other on Oct. 19th at UM.
MONTANA LAST YEAR: Montana was 7-4 last season and third (tie) in the Big Sky (5-3).
25 STRAIGHT WINNING SEASONS: The Grizzlies have had 25 consecutive winning seasons, a streak which began in 1986.
15+ STARTERS BACK: The Griz return seven starters on offense, seven-and-a-half on defense, and their kicker/punter.
STREAKS HALTED: In 2010, for the first time since 1993, Montana did not advance to the FCS (I-AA) playoffs. The Griz had participated in 17 in a row. Also in 2010, for the first time in the previous 12 seasons, the Grizzlies did not win (or at least share) the Big Sky title.
ALWAYS IN THE HUNT: Montana has finished first or second in the Big Sky 15 of the past 18 seasons, and has won a total of 18 league titles (12 in a row from 1998-2009).
