The Montana Television Network has named Dennis Patchin as the new television voice of The University of Montana Grizzlies. Patchin will take to the air with MTN's telecast of the Griz home opener against Cal-Poly on September 10. In addition, MTN will broadcast all of Montana's Big Sky Conference games in high definition.
Patchin has an extensive resume of work throughout the Pacific Northwest. He's been the television voice for many teams in the Spokane area, including the Spokane Chiefs, Gonzaga Bulldogs, Washington State Cougars, Idaho Vandals, Eastern Washington Eagles, Whitworth Pirates, Spokane Indians, and G.S.L. football and basketball.
KPAX-TV General Manager and President Bob Hermes, who serves as executive producer for the telecasts, said, "We are extremely excited to have someone of Dennis' stature contributing to our broadcasts. The addition of Dennis continues our commitment across the state to providing viewers with the best coverage of local news, weather, and in this case sports."
Patchin spent four years as the radio voice of the Gonzaga Bulldogs for four seasons, during which the Zags went to three straight Sweet 16 tournaments in the post-season. In addition, he was the television voice of Gonzaga basketball games for five years, and the voice of Big Sky Conference football for three years on Fox Sports Net Northwest.
Patchin is no stranger to Montana athletics. He announced Montana football and basketball games during his tenure as sports director at KECI-TV in 1982 and 1983. He has broadcast six Cat-Griz games along with two state high school basketball championships on TV.
He has won an Emmy Award for his work in television, and is a three time nominee an Edward R. Morrow Award. He also has been nominated for broadcaster of the year in Idaho (radio), Montana (television) and, Washington (both). He's been voted the most popular television sportscaster 10 years and running by viewers in Spokane.
Patchin will be joined in the booth by color commentators Bob Hermes and former Grizzly quarterbacks Grady Bennett and John Edwards Veteran producer-director Greg Heintzman returns for his 18th season of coordinating each week's telecast in tandem with the KPAX-TV's Production Department crew of Dave McLean, Dave Pleasant, Jim Sanders, and Carrie Butler.
Beginning with the September 17th Big Sky opener against Eastern Washington, MTN will broadcast Montana football games in high definition. The HD format has become a staple of sports broadcasting and Montana will join the ranks of major colleges with HD productions.
"Viewers have been asking for an HD broadcast and we're proud to provide it to them" Hermes said. "This is the sort of quality Montana athletics and Montana viewers deserve and I'm sure fans across the state will enjoy the crisp clear signal high definition provides."
